Two Speed Transfer Box

Off Roaders need very low gears for crawling up and down muddy hills. This is easy to do, just put a set of suitable differentials on and Bobs your uncle. Trouble is you get on to the roads and your top speed is now 45mph with the engine bouncing off the red line.

So the obvious solution is to stick in a transfer box, Basically a pair of intermediate gears one High (ish) one very low.

Now by simply inserting an extra gear stick we can select either high or low ratios, so instead of the 5 forward gears we had before we now have 10 forward and 2 reverse gears.

In some older 4*4's you could also get overdrive, which was effectively a second transfer box giving even higher high gears, often this only worked on third and top
