With the electronics in cars becoming better and more sophisticated there is no wonder that gimmicks like this are being fitted.
Generally a cars radio stereo hi-fi or whatever is fitted in front of you in the dash. So why do we need a remote control which is in front of you on the steering wheel. Well of course for convenience and who in their right mind would buy a car without such a luxury.
There are many different types of remote control and the way they work and what they actually control also varies.
They can be a stalk close to the steering wheel itself, maybe a multi function switch behind the steering wheel or even attached to the steering wheel itself.
Peugeot use the stalk method on it's 406 range this control unit allows volume control as well as radio control via twisting or pulling and pushing.
Renault use the multi function control unit to change volume radio station and it even has a rotating wheel at the rear to browse through your preset radio stations.
Vauxhall Omega is one of the makers who utilises the steering wheel itself. Making the control switches close to your finger tips. Well thumbs actually.
The ultimate however has to go to Renault with it's Espace
remote. This little baby has more functions than your home TV and VCR. Yes this
is the ultimate in remote control.
The car itself has its stereo somewhere other than the dash. I do not know where
to be honest I found the multi change CD player it is in the boot the radio
location is however a mystery.
The radio cd system is displayed via a digital display on the dash it works well but all control must be done via the infra red remote which sends the signal to a pick up sensor in the roof. Excellent working system but what do you do when you loose the remote?
