Most all cars used to have a chrome grill, then they had plain metal ones, then plastic ones, now chrome ones seem to be creeping back in.
Often now though its not so much chrome as a sort of chrome like plastic over a plastic grill. Though some of the more traditional models retain their trade mark grills.
The whole point of the grill was and is to protect the radiator core from flying road debris, like suicidal pigeons and the like.
