The delay on the courtesy light is a simple device. Once the car door is opened or closed it allows a time before it turns the lights off.
So when entering the car at night the car interior stays illuminated long enough for you to put the ignition key in, or maybe a child into its seat without fumbling in the dark.
The light is automatic and will turn off after a time or when the ignition is turned on.
Some cars use the standard lights in the roof lining and others have many more including lights in the door panels.
