Readers Road Test 1992 (K) Ford Fiesta XR2i 1.8 16v

Ford

Hey,

Just read your review of the 2i and although I own a Micra SR now, all my other cars have been Fiestas. The top Fiesta I had was a mk3 1.6s and despite their being obvious differences between it and the XR2i, I immediately identified with one thing in your review. The hard ride. Every bump would be accurately telegraphed to your spine and if you had a CD player, forget it. Skip  wasn't the word. I got rid of the Fiesta because the rear arches and below the filler cap was starting to rust (a bad area on mk3's - hope your's isn't going there). As for choice of Fiesta, the only one I'd consider having now is the RS1800...the other are just too common on the modified car scene (a big reason for me picking a Micra now). Apparently there was only about 5000 RS1800's made? Don't know if that's true. Anyways, don't want to bother you anymore. Take it easy.

The XR2i was also the most reliable car I’ve ever owned.  I bought mine (a 92 K) with 32,000 on the clock, and thrashed it to 75,000 miles before selling it.  All that broke were the drive shafts (they wore out, leading to vibration at speed), and the electric window motor.  Incredible car, but I always found the steering heavy, and unless shod with Yokohama ’s, it was unpredictable in the wet.  It also wasn’t the quickest car, and left me envious of the Renault Clio 16v’s and the RS1800’s of the time.

I got an RS Turbo and it isn't as quick as the 1800 16v
