UK CAR Reviews: Peugeot 306 1.4 XL - Readers Comments

Dear Sir, the 306 1.4 you sampled with stiff steering must have been a faulty one. My 1995 1.4 XR 5 door hatch with P.A.S. has very good steering and handling. I have driven Vauxhall Cavaliers (vague) and Citroen Xantia (good) Fiesta Mk1 (ok) Vauxhall Astra TDS Estate (poor) , but my 306 is the best yet. It could do with a bit more power , say 90 bhp and bigger / vented front disks. I guess because it is so good to drive you end up craving for more power! I have added an underbonnet sound-proofing panel and I am going to change the drivers door mirror to the wide angle version found on later models. It could do with a cover by the handbrake lever to stop things disappearing down a big hole. Peugeot don't make one though. Not the most reliable of cars but it makes up for it by being fun to drive!

My little 306 is a lovely car, although it does seem to have a mind of it's own. Sometimes, when you've been using the car alot in heavy traffic, the biting point on the clutch will suddenly drop to the floor leaving you stuck, trying to select a gear.

Then a few moments later, it will correct itself and off you go, leaving a trail of traffic behind you.

Also the central locking will only work when it's dry. If it rain's slightly then you must lock the doors manually!

The gears on this Peugeot are quite clunky, and I'd be interested if other 306 owners have the same problems. Mine is an L reg XTdt.

Apart from that the 1.9 turbo diesel engine is very reliable, and the handling is amazing.
