I was quite surprised to find anyone who would spend time writing about Rover's 416GSi, but yes you are right, it is an old codgers rover but using one as a second car to work and back, I find it great fun to make that wizzy 1.6 honda engine work through a great gearbox and surprise the A4 reps and "boyracer" clan with a ten year old boring looking 416!

Dear Sir,
Thank you for the review of this car but I have to point out some
inaccuracies:

Rovers Zingy little 1.6 engine in a Honda Concerto Chassis. To the plain
bigoted that doesn't sound very good does it. The Last vestiges of the old
BL, Austin Rover, cant make decent engines can they? And Honda for god
sake,
they make great engines but they don't make great chassis do they?
Well I'm sorry but your living in the past. Honda make decently engineered
cars with fine chassis, and Rovers late model motors were a million miles
from the sluggy old A, B and C series efforts they inflicted on the
British
public for the best part of 40 years....
In essence the 416 is a Honda touched and smartened up to suit western
tastes, and driven by a smart performing Rover motor.

The Rover 416GSi and Rover 416GTi are as you say, based on a Honda
chassis.
However, they also have Honda Engines, the D16/A8 and D16/A9
416GSi: Single cam 1590cc
416GTi: Twin Can 1590cc.
Thanks,
Andrew

I have owned a 416 GSI for 6 years now and it never fails to put
a smile on
my face whilst driving, it knocks the spots (or should it be zits!) of the
'boy racers' with their go faster xr3i nova's etc. the look on their faces
when they get left at traffic lights is classic, unfortunately in the town
where I live, a few of these racers have cottoned on to these cars and their
capabilities.
In the time that I have owned it I have replaced CV joints, shocks and the
relay they chose to hide behind the centre console, other than these few
items it has been ultra reliable.
Down points are the 'lecky' windows that are a bit erratic-slow or not at all
and the high revs running down the motorway-5th could have been an overdrive
to improve mpg.
They are also prone to side winds on motorways and when passing huge lorries
but you soon get used to it.
My other car at the moment is a Mondeo- what a pile of 'cak' boring,
uninspiring but more economical on juice.
At present looking to 'out' the mondeo and get a 620
I would recommend the 416gsi to anyone, give them a test drive and take it up
to 5000+ revs and watch their faces!!!!
Old mans car-well it can be driven sedately, but you can also drive it
properly
