Vauxhall Astra GTE
When the car was launched, it was one the fastest cars around, blowing the Golf GTI, Escort XR3I and the like permanently to the weeds.
I have owned two of these cars now and I have also owned an early 1.8 GTE 8v. Currently I have a 1990 GTE 16v in metallic black (see picture below) and can't fault it. The best thing about the car is the sheer outright performance. 150bhp in quite a small car really does feel like something special. Figures on road tests, have quoted it at 137mph and 0-60 in 7.4 seconds.
The car is very well equipped, with electric windows & mirrors, tilt &
slide sunroof, central locking, front fog lights, power steering the list
just goes on & on.
Inside you have the very supportive Recaro seats which hold you in all the right places, and the novel digital dash, which looks gimmicky but rarely goes wrong and is cheap to replace. A very clear driver view, height adjustable seat, and height adjustable steering wheel.
Alloys came as standard, as did the extra body trimmings, headlamp wash etc. The 16v also has a twin exhaust back box which adds to its sporting
But it is on the road where the Astra really comes good, with plenty of
power to play with. Overtaking is a breeze, even in fifth gear, helped by over 170lb per feet of torque. Off the mark performance is amazing, you can hit 42mph in first gear.
At 21 it is the fastest car I have owned, and can not think of anything
with the same sort of performance for the money.
Expect to pay between £800 for an 88/89 Average condition to - £2500 for a mint 91 model.
