UK CAR Reviews: Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 Readers Comments

Sure, it's got no street cred, no power, and it wouldn't know good handling if it came up and hit the dear old stager in the face, but when you are 17 years old, a 1.6L Cavalier saloon has more street cred than your average Nova, Fiesta or Metro. I've just bought one and they are quick enough, handle safely enough, have lots of room, and enough equipment to keep me amused for a while.

Sure, it's not a Mondeo (or should that be Mundaneo), but at least it's not a Ford. And anyway, the Mondeo is a far newer design than the Cav so should be better anyway - a Cav is better than a Sierra though, no question!

Just swapped my G reg Cav with 103k on the clock for an F reg with 83k on the clock. Plus £500.

This car will go for ever. Who cares if its crap at eighty mph and it doesn't impress anyone - what kind of saddos are looking anyway?

This is austerity motoring bordering on the free! Don't waste your cash on anything else (well, okay a Mondeo/Sierra would be an acceptable 'go forever' alternative).

I am deliriously happy with my purchase and I am looking forward to 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 years of care free travel.

Dear Sir/Madam

After carefully reading and digesting all that was said about the Cavalier by www.ukcar.com, I felt that the Cavalier was greatly dismissed as a crap and very dull car. Being an owner of a 1.6 K reg standard Cavalier, I can safely say that that have got it wrong. Admittedly what they said about there being lots of spaces to pull little things away was right, but their views on it being a dull ride were completely wrong. The Mk3 version is definitely a lot more stylish then the Mk2, plus it also depends on what the colour is. I owned a frost blue Cav in mint condition (until it caught fire) and it was noticed and admired a lot by the general public. All I wanted to say was that I felt that ukcar.com had produced a harsh review on the Cavalier, and that depending on the condition and engine size, Cavaliers are still very stylish.

Yours sincerely

Phillip Eaton

What have you lot got against the Cavalier? I paid £500 from an auction for
my 1991 1.6 Cavalier a year ago and havn't had a single problem with it! For
it's year, it's in excellent condition, rides excellent and i'd like to see
you find something in it's league that's better. Next time, try getting
someone who's actually driven a car to do the write up!

I am a proud owner of a 1995 cavalier 2.5 v6 which handles well at speeds of over 100 mph in my opinion it would run rings around any mondeo

Hi i was just flying through the web when i discovered your site, i just thought id tell you bout my cav. I had a 1.8 lsi m95 with all the bits it was v clean had 17in wheels and lowered showcar... blah blah blah, unfortunately i hit black ice last year on a hair pin and it went to the big Vauxhall dealers in the sky! i had debts to pay so i only had bout £400 left from insurance payout. I found an H 90 cav lying round the back of a car sales place in dunfermline, they couldn't shift it so i got it for £300!

They thought that it was a complete loss as it just bunny hopped down the road and there was no acceleration! i know it was just plugs and leads and distributor cap and rotary arm it was needing so spend the rest of my money on them.

The car had clocked only 103,000 with one very elderly owner all its life. It now has 135,000 and has never let me down EVER! It has also been in a few bumps! A bus decided to come on to a roundabout while i was on it! a Nissan Micra did a kamikaze I'm no gonna stop at the junction and drove into it and also a maestro used its last remaining breathes of life to destroy the rear of it! it has had a pretty rough time of it but it is the most reliable car I have ever heard of!!

Hi ukcar.com

After owning a cavalier 8v for three years without a problem I thought a change would be nice, I purchased a 1994 16v SRi

cavalier this car had full service history and looked the part, this is where the nightmare begins, after 4 months the top pulley

shattered snapping the cam belt and destroying the cylinder head 15 out of 16 valves were bent, it was a sad time the cheapest

quote for the work was £950,after the repair i was looking forward too many years of trouble free motoring it was not to be,2 weeks

after the repair i put my foot down away from the lights expecting serious excitement and got serious disappointment, another problem a thermostat sensor had misled the engine into thinking it was minus 30 degrees full choke and no power, in for repair again I'm starting to get a bit fed up, the bills for repairs were getting bigger, again the car was repaired and i thought that was it,

a couple of months later bad luck struck again coming up to a roundabout turned on left hand lock a loud noise coming from the

front of the car after breaking down in tears i pulled myself together and found that a cv joint had failed, I have now decided to sell

the car enough is enough, in the cars defence when it was running it was returning around 30 mpg around town, on a run about 38 mpg performance  0-60 around 8 sec top speed not tried but i would say a guess would be over 120 mph,

I spent hours looking at your site its the best, I am a car fanatic so finding this site was great,

Keep up the good work

All the best, Terry

I have just bought a 2.0 Li cavalier for silly money, and upto now, i find it to be a very smooth drive, even at 115+ on the motorway!!(still with some left!) Doing 0-60 in under 9 seconds, the are not many cars that can beat it. I have had allsorts trying, from boy racers in XR3i's and Saxo VTR's which it will eat for breakfast, to reps in BMW 320's which can upset them a lot. I even toyed with a new Golf GTI and he wasn't happy!! Especially as my cav is 11 years old!! The Cavalier is a lovely car, just right in every way, with that little something under the hood to annoy folk from time to time. It corners exeptionally well for a car its size, bearing in mind it is only a family car. I am really pleased with my buy, and if you have about £600 spare, you can easily pick them up. By the way, to get mine on the road, (I bought it stolen/recovered) cost me less than £80, and as I only paid £20 for it, it was a bargain. The best place to look if you've got the time and a little knowledge is in and magazine's salvage pages. Hope you use my little review.
